Good mental and emotional health is when you feel positive about yourself and cope well with the everyday pressures of life. Mental wellness and mental health comes in all shapes and sizes.
If you're struggling with stress, anxiety, low mood, sleep difficulties,  or it doesn't go away, it's time to reach out for support. Our team provides evidence-based support to help you feel like yourself again.

We have a range of clinicians who can provide help with everything from everyday challenges to clinical depression. Depression is extremely common in Aotearoa, with 1 in 6 people  experiencing it at some point in their lifetime. Symptoms range in severity, from feeling generally low to thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

Seeking help for when life is feeling too much is not a sign of weakness. In fact it is a sign of strength. Think about it as exercising and training your mind - just like we exercise and train our bodies.

What type of mental health support is available?

We offer a range of mental health consultations with experienced mental health clinicians including our GPs, nurse practitioners (NPs), mental health nurses, clinical psychologists, health improvement practitioners (HIPs), addiction specialists and health coaches.

The options available depend on your needs and enrolment status.

Frequently asked questions

What is a mental health clinician?
A mental health clinician is a broad term that covers a range of trained health professionals such as a psychologist, counsellor, mental health nurse and social worker. They support your mental and emotional wellbeing by listening, talking things through and helping you create an action plan for you to feel better.

Our team of mental health professionals include mental health nurses, clinical psychologist, occupational therapist, alcohol and drug counsellors and health improvement practitioners.
What is a Health Improvement Practitioner?
A Health Improvement Practitioner (HIP) is a registered mental health professional who works within general practice to provide immediate, practical support for mental health and well-being. In New Zealand, HIPs are trained to offer brief, evidence-based interventions for a wide range of concerns, including stress, anxiety, low mood, sleep difficulties, and lifestyle changes.

At Tend, our HIPs are part of the care team and their services are free for all patients. They work closely with doctors, nurses and health coaches to support your overall well-being.

Sessions with a HIP are 30 minutes and focused on practical strategies you can apply immediately. Whether you need support for mental health challenges or help making positive lifestyle changes, our HIPs provide a welcoming, stigma-free space to help you take control of your health.
What is a Health Coach?
A Health Coach is a trained professional who supports patients in making positive lifestyle and behaviour changes to improve their overall well-being. In New Zealand, Health Coaches work within general practice as part of an integrated care team, helping patients set and achieve health goals related to diet, exercise, stress management, and long-term conditions like diabetes or heart disease.

At Tend, our Health Coaches work alongside doctors, nurses, and Health Improvement Practitioners (HIPs) to provide personalised guidance and motivation. Their services are free for enrolled patients.

They focus on empowering you with practical strategies to build healthy habits, manage stress, and take charge of your health. Whether you need help with meal planning, physical activity, or managing a long-term condition, our Health Coaches are here to support and encourage you every step of the way.
