Alakoka’s passion for nursing began through caring for her grandparents while growing up. Supporting her grandmother through diabetes had a lasting impact on her and inspired her to pursue a career in healthcare, particularly caring for older people. She completed her Diploma in Enrolled Nursing through the Learn As You Earn programme and brings both compassion and lived experience into her work.

She is deeply passionate about elderly care and supporting people with complex health needs, such as diabetes management, wound care, mental health, sexual health, women’s health and immunisations. Influenced by her Pacific background, Alakoka values culturally respectful care and believes in taking the time to truly listen to patients, support their choices and understand their lived experiences.

What Alakoka enjoys most about working as a clinician is being able to slow down, truly listen, and support patients with compassion and respect. She values creating a safe space where people feel heard and understood, acknowledging their fears and uncertainties while respecting their cultural values, lived experiences, and personal choices.

Outside of nursing, Alakoka enjoys spending time with family and friends, staying active through touch rugby, tackle rugby, netball and softball. She also loves watching rugby league and union.

I believe even small moments, like taking time to listen, sharing a laugh, or helping someone feel respected and understood, can make a real difference to their health journey.
