Struggling with blocked ears or muffled hearing? Our specially trained nursing team provides safe, painless ear cleaning and ear wax suction using modern microsuction ear cleaning techniques. Get relief quickly - no GP referral needed.

While regular at-home ear cleaning is part of good ear hygiene, sometimes ear wax becomes too impacted or deeply blocked for home remedies to work. If you've tried olive oil drops, ear cleaning solutions, or other home methods without success, professional ear wax removal is the safest next step. Our trained nurses use medical-grade ear suction equipment to safely remove stubborn wax that won't come out on its own.

What is microsuction ear cleaning?

Ear suction, also known as microsuction ear cleaning, is a safe and gentle way to remove earwax using a small suction device, a bit like a tiny vacuum for your ear.

A specially trained nurse will look inside your ear with a special microscope or headset, then carefully uses the suction tool to remove wax or debris. There’s no water involved and it’s quick, painless and comfortable.

You might hear a soft whistling or slurping sound during the procedure, but it shouldn’t hurt. Most people notice immediate relief and clearer hearing afterward.

Signs you need ear wax removal or ear cleaning

Ear wax helps protect your ears by trapping dust and debris, but sometimes too much of it can build up and cause discomfort. When wax becomes hard or blocked, it can lead to symptoms that affect your hearing and daily comfort.

Common signs include:

  • Muffled hearing or reduced hearing
  • Feeling of fullness or pressure in your ears
  • Ringing in your ears (tinnitus)
  • Itchiness or discomfort
  • Visible wax buildup affecting your hearing

What happens during your ear wax extraction appointment?

Your nurse will:

1. Examine your ears using specialised equipment to assess the wax buildup

2. Explain the process so you know exactly what to expect

3. Gently remove the wax using a low-pressure suction device and specialised instruments under direct vision through a specialised headset.

4. Provide aftercare advice to help maintain healthy ears long-term

How to prepare for your ear cleaning appointment

Use a couple drops of normal olive oil for 2–3 nights before your visit. This softens the wax, making removal quicker and more comfortable. This is recommended for everyone unless you have suffered an injury to your ear or have ear pain.

Frequently asked questions

Which Tend clinics offer ear cleaning?
We have specially trained nurses at Tend Kingsland in Auckland and Tend Greerton and Tend Pāpāmoa in Tauranga who can do this procedure.
Is ear suction painful?
No, ear suction (microsuction) is generally painless and well-tolerated. You may feel slight pressure or hear suction sounds, but most people find the procedure comfortable. If you experience any discomfort, let your nurse know immediately.
How long does professional ear cleaning take?
Your first appointment is usually 30 minutes, so the nurse can assess your ears. After that, most treatments take 15–30 minutes, depending on how much wax there is and whether one or both ears need cleaning. Your nurse will check your ears first and explain what to expect.
Do I need a GP referral for ear cleaning?
No, you can book ear cleaning directly with Tend without a GP referral either through the app or by calling your local clinic.
What's the difference between ear wax suction and ear syringing?
Ear wax suction (also called microsuction) gently removes wax using a small suction device while the nurse can see inside your ear. Ear syringing uses water to flush the wax out. Ear suction is generally considered safer and more accurate and is preferred by ear specialists.
Can everyone get ear suction?
Ear suction is safe for most people, but we may recommend alternative options if you have an active ear infection, perforated eardrum or recent ear surgery. Our nurses will assess your ears before proceeding.
Can children get earwax removal?
Yes, ear suction is safe for children. Our nurses are experienced in treating patients of all ages and will ensure your child feels comfortable throughout the procedure.
