No. For your safety and to comply with New Zealand law, you cannot participate in a video consultation while driving - even with hands-free or self-driving features.
Video consultations require looking at and interacting with your screen, which doesn't meet legal requirements for hands-free use. See NZTA guidance on mobile phone use while driving.
What to do if you're on the road
- Find a safe place to pull over and stop completely
- Check in for your appointment (if not already done)
- If you can't stop safely within a few minutes, end the call and rebook
If you answer the call while driving
- Your clinician will remind you we cannot proceed and ask you to pull over.
- If you're still driving on the second call, your appointment will be marked as "Did not arrive." A DNA fee will apply according to our cancellation and DNA policy
Driving vs being driven
- Driving: Behind the wheel, responsible for the vehicle (includes using "autopilot" features) - no consultation allowed
- Being driven: You're a passenger - consultation allowed provided you have network connectivity (others may overhear).
